Residents Reaching Health and Wellness Goals Through the Health Care Navigator

Mary Murphy joined the Kingswood team 11 years ago as the director of health services. Since that time, she’s seen many changes at the community, including the recent expansion and renovation that redesigned and added new amenities and expanded wellness options. But one thing always remains true for Kingswood – it’s a service-driven community. Continuing their efforts to provide the best service, Mary has taken on a new role as Health Care Navigator, enhancing the lives of Kingswood residents each and every day.

Q: As the Health Care Navigator, describe your role and why this position is so unique to the Kansas City metro.

A: This is a first-of-its-kind position in the metro that’s like a social worker of sorts. I’m responsible for guiding each of our residents to their health and wellness goals. From the moment they become a Kingswood resident, I’m guiding them and acting as an advocate not only for the residents, but also for their families. If I see a resident needs a diet change, I make sure I’m talking to the right people and getting this done. If I see a resident needs a change in care, I reach out to the nurses and make sure we’re meeting that resident’s overall wellness needs. I’m here to help them avoid hospitalization or acute care, and support them through their options, which includes the assisted living and memory care portions of our campus.

Q: What makes Kingswood unique from other communities in the Kansas City metro?

A: I’d say it’s definitely our long history. We’re truly a part of Kansas City. We’ve been in this location for 35 years. We have residents now whose parents lived here. They saw the lifestyle and care we provided, and they knew this was the option for them. Along with our history, we have the spectrum of care that just can’t be beat. As a Life Plan community, residents and their families know they have a plan for the unexpected. Our residents have access to the full continuum of on-site care options. We have assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing and rehabilitation all in this one community and all under one roof. Our staff is top-notch, and have been ranked as one of the best in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about your career?

A: Many residents make great comebacks because of our health center. Our staff members work with our residents and know their needs. It’s amazing to hear a resident who once said, “I didn’t think I would walk again,” be able to take small steps after working with our staff. It’s definitely one of the best parts of the job. We assist our residents with their daily needs and provide round-the-clock care in a homelike environment.

Q: What inspired your path to senior living?

A: I always knew I was meant to work with seniors. I’ve always enjoyed hearing their stories. Before joining the Kingswood team, I helped open other senior living communities and worked in other not-for-profit communities. It’s been an honor to help seniors experience the best that life offers as you age. Kingswood does just that.
